Summit would be better without the Summit Daily’s editorial department

Kent J. Forss Frisco

There are so many reasons we have to be thankful for living in Summit County. God’s handiwork truly surrounds us.My family and I have enjoyed having a home here for the last five years. There is however, one item that would make Summit County an even more positive place to live. That would be to drop the editorial department (or at least the editorial cartoon) from the Summit Daily News. I enjoy the newspaper in general for the human interest stories, current events, weather and sports, but I cringe everyday when I have to turn past the pages of the editorial department. The amount of anger and hatred directed at our president by the daily editorial cartoon is appalling. When Summit Daily News publisher Jim Morgan wrote his column Aug. 24 chastising a reader for sending in a letter that could have been written (according to Mr. Morgan) from a Republican National Committee Web site, I had to laugh at the hypocrisy.Virtually every editorial cartoon the Summit Daily staff selects spews such hatred toward President Bush that it appears the Summit Daily editorial staff receives all its information from the Web site of the Democratic National Committee! The question is, “Where is the balance?” All of the regular columnists, such as Biff America and Rich Mayfield, are self-proclaimed liberals, yet there are no non-left viewpoints represented. In order for a newspaper to have credibility, there must be balance. If the Summit Daily News can’t do better than assemble an editorial staff that acts as an extension of the propaganda of the Democratic National Committee, then perhaps the Summit Daily News could provide the residents of Summit County with a more positive peaceful environment by having the editorial staff cease to exist.
