Summit’s 2004 mountain bike season already taking shape

SUMMIT COUNTY – Fire up the weight room training and start shopping for indoor trainers. The 2004 mountain bike season isn’t as far away as you think.

“(Racing) doesn’t get any better than it is here,” Maverick Sports race promoter Mike McCormack said.

“It’s not about racing your bike; it’s about riding it.”

While Maverick Sports has yet to announce venues, the dates are more or less set in stone for the 18th annual Summit Mountain Challenge.

The seven-race series will be held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer beginning June 9 and ending Aug. 25.

McCormack hinted at including a few new venues for 2004, as Maverick Sports tries to give some of the older venues a break from the heavy traffic associated with racing.

The Mountain Bike Little League will also return for its third season.

“The little league is going to be awesome,” McCormack said. “It’s taken a quantum leap in every year of it’s existence.”

Junior riders racing in the program’s fourth season can look foward to higher quality jerseys, as well as an opportunity to qualify for junior mountian bike championships being held on the West Coast.

Maverick Sports will also be holding their fourth annual Firecracker 50 endurance race on July 4, as well as their third edition of the resurrected Fall Classic Stage Race on Sept. 11 and 12.

Thane Wright with Arapahoe Warriors Events Promotion returns as race promoter of the Snake River Fat Tire Festival from Sept. 4 to Sept. 6.

This event will once again feature cross-country, downhill and mountaincross races, as well as a trials competition.

It will also be part of the Mountain States Cup championship series, which features races throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Utah.

But Wright will only be taking that event on after defending his title in the 2004 Montezuma’s Revenge, to be held in late July or August.
