Support County Measure 1A to promote local water storage

Taylor E. Hawes, Northwest Colorado Council of Government's Water Quality and Quantity Committee, Silverthorne

I urge Summit County residents to vote yes for Summit County Referred Measure 1A – not to be confused with Referendum A, which also deals with water but is a state referendum.

For the last five years, local and Front Range stakeholders have been studying the water demands and shortages in Summit County, including recreational and environmental demands.

The study, called the Upper Colorado River Project (UPCO), determined that Summit County’s domestic water demands would double by 2030.

If we do nothing, there will be shortages. There are additional shortages relative to recreational and environmental needs as well as impacts to the marina operations due to greater use of Dillon Reservoir by Denver.

Denver is participating in the study and in the subsequent search for solutions to the problems identified by the study, but Summit County needs financial resources to mitigate these impacts.

County Measure 1A will provide funds to mitigate these impacts. The funds will be used to purchase water rights, to build small, environmentally sound reservoirs to store water for domestic, recreational and environmental needs and shore up existing supplies for Summit County’s future.

Additionally, funds will be used to improve stream channels and fish habitat like the recently completed Blue River Restoration Project.
