Support the petition

Nancy Cook Schorr

I am writing with regard to the current local controversy over the petition being circulated to bring the peninsula golf issue to a vote.

I support the petition, and in fact I have volunteered to help collect signatures. Although I do not support a golf course on the peninsula, my personal lack of support for such a facility is not what motivates me to collect signatures. I mainly want the people of Frisco to decide whether they even want a golf course before any money is spent on consultants, planning, and so forth on the subject.

We have all kinds of other recreational things going on that could benefit from those funds, and if the people do not wish for a golf course in the first place, why spend the money on consultation? Beyond recreation, there are countless other worthy causes that could benefit from the money spent for consultation and planning on something the town may simply find is not mandated by the people.

In the long run, I see this entire petition process to be of benefit to everyone. It certainly has gotten a lot of people out of apathy mode – people are thinking and talking about what’s important to us as a community, even if we don’t agree. A successful petition drive that puts the vote on the ballot will allow the town to truly act on the wishes of the people. By having another vote, rather than just relying on a 10-year-old “no,” we will get a clear idea of what is important to the majority of the current local population. If the people of the community truly wish for another golf course in this county, well, we are a democracy, so let the process flourish. I congratulate anyone who is thinking about this seriously, and carefully, and allowing the democratic process to work, regardless of their position.
