Suspect in date rape drug investigation disappears

BRECKENRIDGE – Breckenridge police have issued a nationwide arrest warrant for a man charged with sexual assault.

County Court Judge Ed Casias signed a warrant Tuesday calling for the arrest of Ira James Largent of Breckenridge. The 27-year-old is charged with sexual assault in the first degree with an aggravated sentencing enhancer because he is accused of using date-rape drugs to subdue his victims.

According to Breckenridge Police Detective George Booth, police received a complaint about Largent over an incident that occurred Dec. 24. Another alleged victim filed a complaint April 15. The victims reportedly are friends of Largent’s who socialized with him in bars and, on the occasions in question, accepted alcoholic drinks from him and subsequently blacked out.

When police went to Largent’s apartment Wednesday, they discovered the unit was empty.

“He seemed very confident when I interviewed him (April 17),” Booth said. “I believe he thought he lied his way out of it. After that, I interviewed his friends and associates, and someone may have reported that to him. He probably realized this wasn’t going away and fled.”

Booth said Largent may have relocated in the county or fled to California. The detective also said he suspects there may be other victims who have not come forward. Booth said he hopes to hear from them.

“Even if they want to remain anonymous,” he said, “I’d like to get them information on resources if they need help or someone to talk to and, of course, if they would be willing to help our investigation, we’d like that, too.”
