Take action to support local libraries

As anyone who’s been reading the papers knows, the state’s library system in general and Summit County’s in particular – as well as all other services that enhance the quality of life – are under financial siege.

Last year, Gov. William Owens – the “education governor” – line-item vetoed all library funds. This year’s prospective budget now carries a pittance to keep a few services going, but even that bit is endangered.

The county, itself under financial siege, has been forced to cut back on its support of our local system.

There isn’t much any of us can do about this beyond calling or e-mailing our state and county representatives and bewailing the situation, but my wife has come up with an idea that I think has merit on several counts.

She belongs to two book clubs and already has mobilized one to contribute $5 a member to our local library support group, Friends of the Summit County Library. She’ll soon be getting after the second club to do the same.

If the members of all the book clubs in the county, and in the state, would do the same it would accomplish two things: 1. Alleviate (but certainly not solve) the libraries’ financial crunch, and 2. Send a needed message of support to the beleaguered (and I’m sure underpaid) workers who are struggling under enormous constraints to keep the whole system afloat.

In a country like ours, dedicated as it claims to be to essential freedoms, the decline of our libraries is almost too grim to contemplate.
