BRECKENRIDGE – “Taught to be Proud,” Tea Leaf Green’s new album, was recorded in only six days and in the middle of nowhere. It was in a ranch in Mendocino, Calif., in July of last year, that the four members of the band – Trevor Garrod, Josh Clark, Scott Rager and Franz Hanzerbeak – recorded the album that would change each of their lives. Two months later, in October, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead sat in with the band at a benefit concert in San Francisco. In November, they got to open a couple of shows for former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio’s Volt Parade. Then in the same month they opened for Gov’t Mule, the blues rock band fronted by Allman Brothers Band guitarist, Warren Haynes. It was a very good year.

“Taught to be Proud” was released on Reincarnate Records in November of 2005. “I feel like it is our first real record,” said Garrod. “All the others were just rehearsals.”The title comes from one of the songs on the record and, according to Garrod, it represents a lot of what they wanted to say. They were going for “classic California, kind of 60’s or 70’s,” he said. The band’s fan base has been growing consistently since the release of “Taught to be Proud.”They’ve been touring with it ever since, but they hadn’t hit Colorado until now. Sherpa and Yeti’s is the first stop on their Colorado tour. Starting at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, the band will be presenting “Taught to be Proud” in Breckenridge. “We’ve played quite a lot in Colorado and even two or three times at Sherpa and Yeti’s,” said Garrod. “I feel like we are doing better and better out there and people like us more every time.”

After Breckenridge and before heading to the Midwest, the band will be touring Colorado. They’ll be in Aspen Wednesday, Boulder Thursday, in Denver on Friday, Telluride Jan. 14, in Fort Collins on Jan. 15, Steamboat Springs Jan. 18 and 19 and in Vail on Jan. 20 and 21.Tickets for Tuesday’s show are $7 in advance and can be purchased at Space Cowboy in Breckenridge and Affordable Music in Dillon. They will also be sold at the door for $8. Live MusicWhat: Tea Leaf Green
