SILVERTHORNE – The telephone outage in Silverthorne and Wildernest that started about noon on Wednesday was caused by a contractor, DKS Enterprises, which was installing a new street light pole on Highway 9, at the corner by the entrance to westbound Interstate 70.Dave Bittner, who works in an office at the intersection and watched the work, said the contractor used a power auger to set the concrete base of the light pole and drilled right through the buried telephone cable.Qwest crews that responded to repair the damage said that at least one 900-pair telephone cable had been severed. Workers told Bittner they expected to be working through Wednesday night to repair the damage. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, six Qwest trucks and one backhoe were on the scene.
