Teresa Zube McMahon: Will miss Ullr’s Sports Bar

I have been spending an inordinate amount of time recently on the phone with my sisters, both being consoled over the loss of my favorite watering hole and assured that I am not overreacting. Ten years ago, I walked into Ullr’s and that was that. It was my Cheers. I’ve seen bartenders come and go, and loved them all. It was where my husband and I hung out while dating, where our families convened when in town for our wedding, where folks toasted my uncle and then my grandfather when I couldn’t get home for their funerals, and where I showed off my babies and enjoyed my first frothy adult beverage after two nine-month hiatuses. These days it had become my weekly escape when the coveted “hall pass” (a phrase coined by my Ullr’s clan) was mine to enjoy for the evening and also where my husband and I were welcome to bring the kids for an early adult beverage.

And now it will no longer be. I’m at a loss for words, but I must say thanks, at the very least. To the bartenders and patrons at Ullr’s, past and present. More specifically, thanks to Adam for the laughs (and your Mom is a sweetheart, no wonder you turned out awesomely); thanks to James for knowing exactly how Mike likes his chicken cheesesteak, though I should know; thanks to Margo for being Keenan’s favorite bartender; thanks to Perm for being such a great sport and not rubbing it in when your Flyers crushed my Devils; thanks to Rob for sharing in sleepless parenting chit-chat; and thanks to Robert for inventing the ‘pickle boat’ for Cora. Thanks to all of you for making Ullr’s what it was. Awesome.

You will be missed. Cheers.
