Terry J. Kryshak: No excuse for bad tourist driving

I would like to add to the dialogue responding to Claude Gunter and the need for locals to tolerate visitors better.

There is no doubt our economy is based on tourists, and these tourists do disrupt our daily routines. Every time there is an influx of tourists I take my patient pill and do all I can to welcome these tourists to our county. I even thank them for being here and tell them I hope they help our economy by spending freely.

What I do not accept are the atrocious driving habits they bring with them. Running red lights, speeding, not using turn signals (although this is not only a tourist issue), turning across several lanes of traffic with no warning, stopping in unsafe spots (Dam Road). Safe driving is required in all states and failure to do so is not only a traffic infraction; but most importantly extremely dangerous and puts me and my family at a serious risk.

There is no excuse for this poor/unsafe/discourteous driving. Asking locals to tolerate this is unacceptable, everyone has to take personal responsibility for their actions and you cannot ignore traffic laws because you are on vacation. I hope the tourists continue to come to Summit County; but I also hope our law enforcement team can get the funding they need to protect us from careless drivers since it does not appear that visitors are willing to accept the consequences of their own actions.
