Texan-bashing unnecessary

H.L. Dodd, The Woodlands, Texas

I am sure that you know that “the cause for Texans Against Summit Up” exists only in the mind of the Summit Up column writer. I assure you that I have no interest in the column other than its relationship to the attitude of your newspaper. However, I do admit to being saddened by the increasingly personal attacks made on me by your columnist, the most recent being printed in your Aug. 1 edition.

You may recall that I first wrote you after your edition of July 9. In that letter I expressed surprise that your paper would want to publish material which appeared to be deliberately offensive to out-of-state visitors who enjoy their vacations in Summit County and by doing so contribute to the local economy. You may also recall that I wrote a second letter on July 24 in which I expressed disappointment that you chose not to print my original letter so that it could be read in context, but instead passed it on to your columnist to use as he/she saw fit. My letters have still not been acknowledged other than by the attacks mentioned previously. I hope that your silence does not indicate your agreement with the hostility displayed.

Despite my unpleasant experience with your newspaper, I want to emphasize that I have found the vast majority of the people in Summit County with whom I have come into contact to be friendly, outgoing, and a pleasure to deal with. I will close with the hope that your newspaper will become a positive factor in the relationship between these fine people and their out-of-state visitors.
