Thanks for asking for the facts

Thank you Evan Trevathan (SDN, Nov. 17) for asking why it is important for the Breckenridge town ordinance to incorporate a sexual orientation clause into its Equal Employment Opportunity policies. Sexual orientation includes protection for heterosexual as well as homosexual, bisexual, and asexual people in the workplace. Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies provide a workplace that is safe and therefore a productive work environment for all. EEO policies provide protections for all applicants and employees against discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, color, religion, national origin, disability and needs to include sexual orientation. Including sexual orientation in an EEO policy provides equal rights not special rights. In 37 states it is still legal to fire an employee for being gay. I commend the Breckenridge Town Council for considering this equal employment opportunity for all. (Summit County Government as well as many of our local ski areas incorporated sexual orientation in their EEO policies a couple of years ago with no repercussions.) As with many gay equal rights issues, fear and misunderstanding determines a person’s viewpoint – not the facts. Thank you Evan for asking for the facts and clarification.
