Thanks for the petition help, mayor

Tim Smith

It is important to note that the initial decision to pursue a recreation plan for the Frisco Peninsula, which includes a golf course, was based on the distinction between the word “design” and the word “plan.” Rather than overturn the existing ordinance, which prohibits design of a golf course, the council, through creative use of semantics chose to move forward with “planning,” among other recreational amenities, a golf course on the Frisco Peninsula. It is this choice which has resulted in the current petition process aimed at putting the issue to a vote in the November election.

What have been apparent attempts by the mayor on several occasions to thwart the petition process seems to be spurred by what he feels is a challenge to authority. In fact, authority was challenged by a standing-room-only crowd last winter when the council hosted a meeting on the topic to debate whether “design” and “planning” are the same or not. Residents at that meeting overwhelmingly responded that these words are the same, and asked the question of whether or not to include a golf course component in the recreation plan be put to voters in the April election.

These efforts by the mayor, including paid advertising in local newspapers opposing the petition, have inadvertently helped to support the petition effort by drawing attention to it over and over again. The image of a hard-line stance also has generated sympathy for the cause which enjoys an exceptionally high approval rating from those who have been contacted and asked to sign the petition.

As a supporter of the public process we are witnessing, I would like to thank the mayor for his efforts. Keep it up. The help has been great.
