Thanks for the professional rescue effort

I would like to express my appreciation for the members of your community that serve as volunteers in the Summit County Rescue Group, the paramedics in the ambulance service, employees of the U.S. Forest Service (Dillon office) and the deputies and dispatchers of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. On Saturday, Sept. 3, our hunting party was on our way in to camp for a week of elk hunting in the area of Ute Peak. While en route, my father fell and fractured his leg. The accident occurred in sight of Ute Peak at 11,900 feet. At this point, I used a satellite phone to call the Dillon Forest Service office. This call set in motion a monumental effort involving members of all the aforementioned agencies. This effort resulted in a professional, painless and expedited (due to weather) rescue of my father. This extraction was done on foot with little or no mechanical assistance. The rescue unit and county personnel cleared the trail with handsaws and took turns guiding the gurney to the trailhead. Throughout the entire ordeal, the crew was upbeat and very professional while ensuring that my father was comfortable and warm. My father and I both currently serve as law enforcement instructors, and are both former Georgia law enforcement officers as well as formerly certified EMTs.Having now been on both sides of emergency situations, it was refreshing to have such a positive and professional group respond in our time of need.
