Special to the Daily

Recently, 16 SOS youth got to experience a day out on Lake Dillon learning a new sport, sailing. Thanks to the wonderful staff of the Dillon Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program, the SOS youth had an amazing time out on the water, and for many it was their first time out on the Lake. All the youth had a blast and look forward to going out on the water again.

“I had so much fun sailing and liked it when I felt like the boat was going to tip over but it didn’t it was just the wind” said Eli Kanamu.

The youth learned about the different parts of a sailboat, how to tie knots, and how to rig and de-rig the boat. Many of the youth even got to practice capsizing their sail boat. Ali Christensen told us “I got to practice capsizing and it was really scary but so fun. Now if I am sailing and the boat flips I know what to do.” The Dillon Junior Sailing Program is also giving many of our youth the chance to be out on the lake for a whole week during their camps this summer. “We are so excited for this opportunity; it is such a fun way to get youth outdoors and learning about a unique sport. It is a great addition to our summer activities,” said programs coordinator Kaitlin Chandler.

The SOS youth are also active members of their community helping with different service days, such as trail projects and the Pulling for Colorado in July with FDRD. They are also helping to serve at the community dinners at the Elks Lodge in Silverthorne, as well as learn to garden in an experimental plot at the Silvana Gardens. We are also still looking for volunteers so call (970) 763-7168 to get involved.
