The Blue Stag Saloon
For 40 years, it was the waterfront-themed Whale’s Tail. But as of June 2014, the old watering hole has got a whole new bag, one that hits much closer to home. New owner Terry Barbu has transformed the space to resemble a cross between “a turn-of-the-century saloon and a cozy living room,” in his words, while the menu now emphasizes game rather than seafood. Think elk-medallion stroganoff with wild mushrooms, venison skewers in chipotle-cream sauce, bacon-wrapped buffalo meatloaf — and yes, there are Rocky Mountain oysters too, as well as an array of pub plates and pizzas. As for booze, the list of nearly 40 craft beers features local players like Elevation, Upslope and, naturally, Breckenridge Brewery alongside whiskey and wine.
