The loss of Judge Lass will be considerable

Jeffrey S. Ryan, Breckenridge

This week, I had the honor to participate in the last jury trial that District Court Judge David Lass will preside over as a full-time judge here in the Fifth Judicial District.

Sadly for us, Judge Lass is retiring.

The loss of Judge Lass will be considerable.

He combined a deep knowledge of the law with a judicial demeanor that epitomized fairness.

He treated everyone who appeared before him with respect, courtesy and patience.

He always strove to reach the correct decision, one based on the law and the facts.

Personal biases or emotion did not influence his rulings.

In fact, I’ve never had any idea what he personally thought about any case.

Like every attorney, there were times he ruled against me, and times he ruled in my favor, but he always explained his reasoning, and it was always sound.

He always gave due consideration to a lawyer’s argument, never prejudging.

While he followed the law devotedly, he was always humane and exercised compassion on the bench. He treated witnesses, victims and defendants as flesh-and-blood people, not “good guys” or “bad guys.”

Attorney Karen Romeo has been appointed to replace Judge Lass.

I expect to be practicing before her, so I’ll simply say that she is capable and sharp, and will doubtlessly be a fine judge.

She need only look to the example set by Judge Lass to ensure her success.
