The numbers of poor children are daunting

Barbara O'BrienpresidentColorado Children's CampaignDenver

Thank you for your newspaper’s attention to the issue of the high number of children living in poverty in your community. The reactions of surprise by your district’s candidates for House of Representatives are not unlike those of other Colorado communities – the numbers are daunting. The Colorado Children’s Campaign has been providing reliable data on children to communities in Colorado for nearly 20 years. We believe the good news is that your community and its leaders are talking. And they are alarmed. We have seen in communities with similarly disturbing numbers that surprise and disbelief can lead to partnerships, progress and solutions. Greeley, for example, first responded with doubt to troubling data on births to single moms, but ultimately took action by coming together to form “Promises for Weld County’s Children.” The result has been improved, coordinated services for high-risk pregnant women and their children in the community. The Children’s Campaign exists not only to provide data and hard facts, but to help communities and leaders implement solutions. As we have done in communities across the state, we look forward to working with your district and at a statewide policy level to address the children’s issues in Summit, Lake and Eagle counties that your constituents care about most. The numbers are just a beginning.
