The Peak 1 flag is a memorial

Susan O'Brien - Silverthorne

The Peak 1 flag is a memorial. It has been consecrated as such by the actions and good intentions of those who hiked the mountain to raise a flag in memory of the tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001.

It can be a memorial to those who carried the flag, the man who stood on another’s shoulders to secure it, those who held the unfurled banner off the ground, those who looked on and to the many people who could not be on the mountain but were there in spirit.

The flag was a beautiful and meaningful symbol that expressed so much for so many. That symbol may not remain, but Peak 1 will always be there for us. Look to that mountaintop for inspiration, or climb it and spend some time in quiet remembrance.

Evil cannot win in that place where so much good has gone before it.
