The three Rs of costuming

Kimberly Nicoletti

There are three “R’s” when it comes to costumes this Halloween.

“Retro, romantic and Renaissance” are the three themes driving creative costumes this year,” said Stephanie Dell’Olio, president and spokesperson of Home Sewing Association in New York.

For a richly Renaissance costume, create a gown in jewel tones with full blouson sleeves and a flattering silhouette. For a man, stitch up a colorful outfit – and don’t forget the tights. Kids can be pages or handmaidens.

Though it’s not Valentine’s Day, Halloween can be romantic with historical lovers. Let Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra, Rhett and Scarlett, Bogey and Bacall or even Ben Affleck and J-Lo inspire costumes.

Or, you can dress as any number of dead brides and grooms.

Plenty of silver screen inspirations – from Austin Powers to the Matrix, not to mention myriad cartoon characters and superheroes – abound.

Then there’s the time warp – retro Halloween.

“Halloween is the ideal occasion to live out your fantasies,” Dell’Olio said.

Whether you prefer the charleston of the 1920s, de-wop of the ’50s, disco days or flower-child ways, now’s the time to jump into another era.

Speaking of fantasy, why not add a touch of whimsy to Halloween by transforming into a fairy, princess, goddess or other ethereal character?

Be creative, and remember, a good costume can win you top prize in Summit County tonight (see story page B4)
