MONTEZUMA – An A-frame residence in Montezuma, known to locals as the “Tiltin’ Hilton,” was destroyed in a fire Tuesday afternoon. Little remains of the structure where multiple people lived other than the remnants of a collapsed green roof and the scorched frame of the slightly uneven three-story addition that gave the decades-old home its nickname. No one was injured in the blaze. A resident of the home who was inside when the fire broke out was able to escape in time. Firefighters from Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue with assistance from Red, White and Blue Fire responded from their closest station in Keystone at approximately 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, and found the structure completely engulfed in flames. “We came busting up here and still couldn’t make it in time,” Lake Dillon Fire spokesman Steve Lipsher said. “Fortunately there were no injuries.” It is still unclear what caused the blaze, although fire officials say it appears to have been accidental. An investigation of the ignition source is under way. Fourteen firefighters from the two local districts were able to suppress and contain the flames, protecting a neighboring home, by using water from a tank installed in the area two years ago, according to a statement from Lake Dillon Fire. Montezuma had previously had problems with fire hydrants freezing completely in the winter.
