The vote was only the beginning; get involved with the school system
I would like to thank this community for its overwhelming support of the school district mill levy and bond issue ballot questions. It is apparent to me that education is valued here in Summit County, and as a parent I appreciate the support that this community is giving my children.I would especially like to extend my thanks to the towns of Frisco and Breckenridge for supporting these issues. With your resolutions of support, you told the voters of your towns how important a strong educational system is to developing a strong community. However, now is not the time to sit back and celebrate this victory. It is more important than ever to step up to the plate and be an active participant in the educational process in the Summit School District.Success is a journey, not a destination. The board, the superintendent and the teachers will never be satisfied with where they are. They continually want to move forward to provide a better education for our children. Be a part of that journey. Get involved in your child’s classroom as a volunteer. Get involved on a building level as a member of the Accountability Team. It does not require a large amount of your time and you are given the opportunity to help shape the direction of education in that school. These meetings are also open to the public, so if you missed the opportunity to be on the team this year, don’t use that as an excuse – attend the meetings and voice your opinion. See what is happening on a district level. Attend the District Accountability Committee meetings. Attend the board meetings. The board has worked very hard to make the board meetings less intimidating. Use this as your opportunity to speak up and voice your opinion – and your idea for a solution. Can’t be at the meetings? Then make a phone call or send an e-mail to the board members.Three large construction projects are now under way. Ask to be involved in a design review committee. It is exciting and fun to be a part of our children’s future.Whatever you do, don’t sit back and complain because that will not solve anything. What is right with the district? What is wrong with the district? What is good but needs to get better? Be a part of the solution.Join the board, the school staff and hundreds of other volunteers on this journey. It will be one of the most rewarding rides of your life.
