Theresa Neumaier: We’ve got great schools here

I am very grateful to live in Summit County and think that my children are receiving an excellent education despite what Mr. Thompson of Dillon may think. Equal access, in theory, is taking into consideration that all children should be exposed to a rigorous curriculum. This is essential for all students and not just the high achieving. If given the chance, opening up the access to all children will give them the opportunity to rise to the challenge, and to succeed. I believe that dramatic gains can be achieved by students who have been subjected to low expectations; despite what society may think is their lot in life. Whether their parents are highly educated or not, whether their socioeconomic status puts them on the track for college or not, these students have the right to attend rigorous classes and to prepare themselves for the future.

To assume that the school board is uninformed is ridiculously unfair. These individuals are voted into office and dedicate countless hours of unpaid time to vote on what they believe to be the best solutions to very difficult circumstances. I think they are making educated decisions to benefit all concerned. In addition, the talented and capable teachers of this district are adapting their instruction to best fulfill the needs of a heterogeneous classroom. Across all ethnicities, adjusting the curriculum to support the goal of all students achieving their potential, whatever that may be, is the ultimate goal. I challenge Mr. Thompson to find a better public school system in the state.
