They’re serious about education

It was a festive atmosphere, but make no mistake, they’re serious about learning at Dillon Valley Elementary.

Thursday, students guided their parents on a tour of their educational experiences as part of the school’s learning fair. The evening event gave parents a chance to find out about projects their children have been working on, meet with teachers and, in some cases, find out what it’s like to be a student.

The evening began with a spaghetti dinner. Students and teachers served up $5 plates of pasta. The funds from the dinner will pay for next year’s fourth-graders to go to High Trails Camp in Florissant where they’ll study fossils.

Parents got a chance to look at science fair exhibits. The hallways of the building were decorated with student art. Kindergarteners showed their parents the reading, writing, science and math skills they’ve been working on. First-graders showed off their writing portfolios. Parents watched videos of class performances, and Spanish students performed plays. Fourth-grade parents were challenged to try the math and language activities their children face in the classroom.

“It’s sort of counter-part to parent-teacher conferences,” said teacher Chris Hall. “It gives the students a chance to share what they’ve been working on with their parents, as opposed to just talking with a teacher. The kids are really proud of their work.”
