Third-grade CSAP scores released

FRISCO ” School district officials released results of this year’s third-grade reading CSAP scores Tuesday, and said despite changes to some rules mandating who takes the test, results were positive and consistent.
“Overall, our kids are learning to read,” said Robin Ziperman, the district’s director of assessment. “There weren’t many surprises ” if any. Kids who did not satisfactorily, for the most part, are already receiving intervention.”
The scores are just a small part of an overall CSAP assessment students in the district go through every year. Third-grade reading results are always released early, so districts can begin planning for fourth-grade reading programs.
Every third-grader was tested this year, a difference from past years, when non-English speakers were given the opportunity to wait up to three years before taking the test. Those students who normally would not have been tested, and therefore do not speak English fluently or in some cases at all, fell in the unsatisfactory score ranges, which was expected, Ziperman said.
Superintendent Millie Hamner shook her head at the overwhelming importance some individuals ” along with some of the media ” tend to place on CSAP scores.
“This is an important measure, don’t get me wrong,” she said. “But we have additional assessments to also see how kids are learning. This is more of a stand-back, big picture kind of test.”
Statewide figures showed 70 percent of this year’s third-graders scored at the proficient or advanced levels on the Colorado Student Assessment Program tests, compared to 71 percent of third-graders in 2005, according to the Associated Press.
“This is not of profound significance,” said Education Commissioner William Moloney.
Summit schools ranged from 61 percent (Dillon Valley) to 97 percent (Summit Cove) in the proficient and advanced levels.
In August, the Education Department will release scores of all CSAP tests given to students in grades three through 10 this school year. Students are tested in reading, writing, math and science.
The district looks at two categories ” those who scored “proficient” and “advanced,” and those who scored “partially proficient” and “unsatisfactory.”
