The Breckenridge Music Festival house band and vocal soloists will perform tonight in BMF Cabaret: Three Divas at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center.
Three fun and fabulous divas — Rachel Assi, Jessica Medoff Bunchman and Christine Robertson — face off in solos, duos and trios from their favorite musical theater and operetta shows, such as “Westside Story,” “A Chorus Line,” “Into the Woods” and more.
Michael Linville will direct the guest artists in a program unlike any of the other BMF shows. With the only instrumentation being piano, bass and drums, the night will focus on the ladies’ voices. Linville, program creator, used input from the performers to make the show even more personal.
“The performers were all very involved in the process,” he said. “In this way, they take more ownership of the program itself.”
Assi, mezzo-soprano, has a wealth of experience both on the stage and behind the scenes. She has appeared in numerous operatic roles with the St. Petersburg Opera, the Bard Summerscape Festival, New Jersey Opera Theater, Coro Lyrico Opera and Rutgers Opera and has sung with the Oregon Bach Festival under the baton of Helmuth Rilling. She also recently performed as a soloist all over the Florida Gulf Coast with organizations including the Sarasota Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony, the Artist Series of Sarasota, Key Chorale, Sarasota Choral Society and the Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning, where noted composers William Bolcom and Ricky Ian Gordon accompanied her.
Lyric soprano Bunchman is known for her versatility throughout many genres of music. From Bartok to Bacharach and back to Bernstein, Bunchman impresses audiences throughout the United States with her style, charm and commitment to text and music. Recent engagements include her debut with Mill City Summer Opera in “Il Barbiere de Siviglia,” Magnolia in “Showboat” with Fresno Grand Opera, Nancy in “Oliver!” with Utah Festival Opera, Judith in “Bluebeard’s Castle” with the symphony of UC Davis, Julie in “Carousel” with the Las Cruces Symphony and more.
Robertson has performed in musical theater and opera and as a concert soloist in many venues across the United States. In Milwaukee, she played the role of Lucy in the highly acclaimed 2011 world premiere of Kirke Mechem’s opera “The Rivals” at Skylight Opera Theatre. In Chicago, she recently appeared as Gabriel/Eve in Haydn’s “The Creation” with the International Chamber Artists. She also starred as Amalia in “She Loves Me,” which received a Joseph Jefferson nomination for best musical in the Chicago area.
