Three Fort Carson soldiers die in Iraq

FORT CARSON – Three Fort Carson soldiers were killed in Iraq when a bomb exploded near their vehicle, the military said Friday.Spc. Ismael G. Solorio, 21, of San Luis, Ariz., Pfc. Brian L. Holden, 20, of Claremont, N.C., and Pvt. Brett A. Walton, 37, of Hillsboro, Ore., were killed Monday in Baghdad, the military said.All were with Fort Carson’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team and had been conducting raids against militants, the military said.At least 196 soldiers from the post near Colorado Springs have died in Iraq.Solorio was recently married and had a young daughter, said his brother, Jesus Solorio of San Luis.Ismael Solorio had been wounded twice previously in Iraq, shot once in the head by a sniper and hit in the hand by shrapnel from a roadside bomb, his brother said. He had been awarded the Purple Heart.Jesus Solorio said his brother enlisted after graduating from high school in 2003.”He made us so proud,” Solorio said. “I remember he was only 17 then so he needed our parents’ signature to enlist.”Walton is survived by his wife and 5-year-old daughter, said Kay Fristad, a spokeswoman for the Oregon National Guard.He was a driver for Airgas Inc. in Portland before entering the Army on Sept. 13, Fristad said. He deployed to Iraq on March 10.Walton told his family that he signed up for the war because “I want to do something to be part of the solution, to make a difference to the people of Iraq,” Fristad said.
