Current career: teacher at summit preschool

Year graduated: 2006

Originally from Georgia, Chelsea Blum moved to Summit County at 10 years old, graduating from Summit High School in 2006.

Blum has fond memories of high school, particularly her three years as a member of the swim team. She also recalls several teachers who impacted her in those early years, such as Becky Oliver, her English teacher. Oliver taught her to write, Blum said, which became a very useful trait for college.

After graduation, Blum attended college at Colorado State University in Pueblo, where she studied to receive her bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in sociology. After graduating last May, Blum returned to Summit County to try to figure out her next move. She did a brief stint as a hostess at Spencer’s restaurant at Beaver Run before applying for a substitute teaching position at Summit Preschool.

She got the job in November and now is a full-time teacher for 1- and 2-year-olds. Though teaching young children wasn’t something Blum had thought much about before, she found herself enjoying the job.

“It’s different, but it’s fun,” she said with a laugh. “I enjoy working with little kids. They’re fun.”

In fact, Blum said she gets to use her knowledge of psychology with the young kids as well, watching as they go through various stages of development.

Blum said she’s still thinking about the future and sorting out her plans. One of her interests lies in helping and working with girls who have been involved with human trafficking. She attended a conference in college where the topic was discussed and the issue has stayed in her mind ever since.

For the moment, however, Blum is enjoying working with the preschool children. Her favorite part about them, she said, is “how much they make me laugh and just how happy they are all the time.”
