After graduating from Summit High School in 1976, Hollis French moved to Alaska in 1978. In the next 12 years, he worked in the oil industry and earned a degree in English from the University of Alaska. French then attended Cornell Law School and joined the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office, where he spent six years prosecuting crime. He was elected to the Alaska state Legislature in 2002, and has served as a senator for West Anchorage ever since. French ran in the 2010 gubernatorial primary race as a Democratic candidate.

“I love my career,” French said.

French has been married to his wife, Peggy, for 22 years. They have a son who is graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder this spring. French and his wife climbed to the summit of Mount McKinley in a small group in 1987. He said he tried it again in 2005, but did not make it. His father Bob French – who climbed Mount McKinley with his son in ’87 served as a Summit County commissioner for six years. French said he still visits Summit County often to visit his father and sister.

When asked about his memories at SHS, French said his most interesting memory stems from senior year. He was called to the principal’s office and asked whether he’d participated in a raid on the school in which some vandalism took place. French said his alibi was airtight: He’d been in Fort Collins the day of the incident at a Bob Dylan concert.
