Special to the DailyIn July of 2012, 85 percent of the Timberline Learning Center's staff attended a Reggio Emilia Conference. The organization is a network of educators, parents and advocates seeking to elevate schools and centers for young children.

On Saturday, the Timberline Learning Center hosts its third annual Wit, Wine & Dine, an evening of live comedy, wine and food, at the Riverwalk Center, 150 W. Adams, Breckenridge. “This year, we are very proud to announce that net proceeds will support enhancements and added safety features to our outdoor exploration areas and playground,” said executive director Leslie Davis. “We specifically hope to incorporate a variety of state-of-the-art ‘green’ play features, along with much needed sun shades to protect our children from the harmful rays of the sun.”Underlying the planned direction is research on skin cancer in children showing that skin cancer accounts for more than half of all cancer cases combined, and that 23 percent of lifetime exposure occurs by age 18, Davis said. “The average child under age 16 gets three times more sun exposure than the average adult annually,” she explained. Eco-friendly playgrounds are made of post-consumer plastic content, in keeping with the center’s goal of green development. “Teaching children about the benefits of making earth-friendly choices early in life will encourage them to grow into environmentally conscious adults,” Davis said. Timberline Learning Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing children with a safe, environmentally responsible educational facility while encouraging children as individuals to grow, learn and face challenges successfully in a fun and supportive environment. Tickets to Saturday’s event are $65/person or $360 for a table of six, with proceeds benefiting the Timberline Learning Center’s planned upgrades. The event starts at 6 p.m. and there is an auction with items including a Vail Resorts Epic season pass, monthly pizza from Fatty’s and a full season of plowing, among others.
