Tom Gonsoulin: Not all gun owners on the fringe

Tom Gonsoulin

In his Saturday opinion column, Mr. Mayfield comments on the current demand for firearms ammunition. Unfortunately, he quickly plays the race card, often a convenient substitute for an inability or unwillingness to look more deeply at a situation. Gun owners are purchasing ammunition not because of Mr. Obama’s race but rather because of his long-standing persistent anti-gun stance. The same response would occur if his anti-gun white chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel, was president.

Furthermore, many gun owners utilize their bullets for target practice, competition shooting, sporting clays, skeet, trap etc. I doubt seriously that Mr. Mayfield’s alleged concern about animals and humans being completely shot up is based on anything remotely connected to reality. In addition, keep in mind the substantial contributions hunting and fishing enthusiasts have made to the preservation of habitat for all wildlife through such actions as the Breaux-Wallup act of 1984 and the North American Waterfowl management plan of 1986.

Every grouping of humans has members on the edge, including politicians and clergy. I would hope Mr. Mayfield is not trying lump every gun owner into a lunatic fringe.
