Tom Scanlan: Sirota stokes divisiveness

I’m surprised that Mr. Sirota, himself a media professional, would rant on about “conservative pundits,” specifically about Ms. Palin’s quote, and then label the pundit’s comments as “violent political rhetoric.” In doing so, Mr. Sirota’s further analysis of how today’s multi-platform media operate to serve a multitude of diverse audiences is somehow lost to all but those who subscribe to his personal political views.

As a retired CEO of a small group of four ABC TV affiliates, I’ve spent a career trying to serve the needs of a wide audience of television viewers, hopefully, with objectivity and without political comment or bias. I’ve always enjoyed scanning the dial and flipping the channels to see what others do in presenting news and commentary. In doing so, I’ve spent considerable time listening to KKZN, Mr. Sirota’s employer, and find his station just as politically charged as many conservative oriented stations, such as Denver’s KHOW, which is owned by the same corporate entity as owns KKZN.

I would advise Mr. Sirota that if he wishes to present comments regarding the media in general, and specifically as it may or may not have influenced the horrible events in Tucson, he leave behind his own personal biases. Had he done so, his remarks on the media, which indeed are to the point and well presented, would have found a wider readership and would not have further stoked the glowing coals of divisiveness.
