Tom Schorr: Runaway health-care costs

Kudos to Dr. Marc Shiffman for bringing the broken health care system to our attention. It is good to hear from a credible source on the front lines. I saw Dr. Shiffman for a routine checkup last summer. He is an excellent, caring doctor. The problem was my insurance, Anthem Blue Cross. I triple checked with Anthem before making an appointment that they would pay for it as required by law. They said yes and then refused to pay. Anthem said Dr. Shiffman’s office didn’t code the visit properly. The doctor’s office and I told Anthem exactly what was done and asked what codes to use. Anthem said they could not tell us the codes. The doctor is just supposed to know them. This is a blatant stall tactic insurance companies routinely use to get customers to give up and pay the bill. My bill was not much over $100 but I would not capitulate based on principle. Anthem finally paid three months later.

I stay healthy and have no claims or pre-existing conditions. This is the service I get for $300/month and a 20 percent increase each year for catastrophic coverage only. At that pace, I too will be forced to give up health insurance before long. Many Americans are one health disaster away from bankruptcy. Many of my friends are stuck in their jobs and paying over $1,000 per month in premiums due to pre-existing conditions.

This status quo of protecting insurance and drug company profits is unsustainable. Our health care dollars are spent on lobbyists, administration, advertisement and private jets. It is hard to believe a national health care system would cost more in taxes than we are paying in premiums and bills now. I supervise my father’s health care. Medicare pays his bills promptly. He gets better care than I do without having to argue over every dime.
