Tom Torres: Missing coverage on veterans

Tom Torres

I waited for a week hoping the Summit Daily News would show what great heroes we had visiting our county over the July 4 weekend, but as normal you showed the same photos of the same people who live here. SDN had a chance you showcase some great men and women who have fought and are still fighting for our independence; we had a several WWII veterans over in Dillon for the July 2 event. One of the veteran was from Easy Company 101st Airborne Division (Band of Brothers), and we had the first female Airborne veterans there also. Did you talk or tell their stories? No!

The Town of Dillon hosted the USO show on July 4, this is a 70-year-old program that all so many soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines look for coming or going to war, to fight for your freedom of speech. Did you tell their story? No! I understand the small-town thing that you have to show the same people, the same parades and highlight the same supports every year. But you had a chance to show our wonderful community that we had some truly American heroes in our town, and I hope they will be around next year, as all Americans know the WWII veterans are passing away every day and maybe next time we have the honor to have such great men and women in uniform you can share their story. Because people need to know their freedom is not free and what the real price of freedom is.
