Toronto architects picked to re-design Boettcher

DENVER ” A Toronto-based architectural firm will lead the redesign of the Boettcher Concert Hall.

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra picked Diamond and Schmitt Architects Tuesday from a field of six candidates for the $90 million project.

Diamond and Schmitt led the design of Toronto’s new opera house and also worked on the restoration and expansion of Detroit’s Max M. Fischer Music Center and the Sidney Harmon Hall in Washington, D.C.

The firm has partnered with Denver’s Oz Architecture for the Boettcher project.

Denver voters backed a $60 million bond last fall to redesign the hall, which was built in 1978. The orchestra has pledged another $30 million for the job.

The hall has problems with its acoustics and accessibility and doesn’t have enough support space, Diamond and Schmitt said.
