The town of Breckenridge announced Wednesday, Oct. 29, on Facebook that it has hired a new police chief after former Chief of Police Jim Baird left to become chief of the Thornton Police Department in May.

Dawn Layman will begin her role as chief on Dec. 1, the post stated. Former Chief Rick Holman served as interim director of public safety and helped the town recruit Layman, who has over 32 years of law enforcement experience.

Layman began her career as a patrol officer in the Lenexa Police Department in Kansas in 1993, according to the Johnson County Post. She served as a detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major and deputy chief before becoming the Lenexa chief in 2020.
