Town would negotiate, but sanitation district not at the table

In my two short years on Breckenridge Town Council, I’ve realized that negotiations are rarely easy and sometimes lead to a bad taste for one party or another. I sure don’t have illusions that the Town (yours truly included), in looking out for the interests of residents, doesn’t step on toes or, on occasion, takes the wrong path.

But given this, Jim Stover (Daily Mail, July 9) of all people should know that negotiations are certainly guaranteed to fail when one party leaves the table. And when the Sanitation District broke off pumpback talks last year, it left Breckenridge to pursue this important project with other parties, which continues today.

Had Jim been in any of the meetings or negotiations between CMC and Breckenridge, he might have a perspective other than some bluster in the paper from a former CMC employee on which he’s drawing his comparison.

Moreover, I’d bet he’d certainly want to rethink this comparison today: Last night Council unanimously voted to convey the land to CMC for the Breckenridge campus ” In essence taking the first step towards a resolution in what I believe was not much more than a miscommunication.

Tough negotiations, yes. But in this case all parties remained at the table, feathers are smoothed, and progress is made.

I’d personally welcome Jim and the Sanitation District back anytime to restart the conversation on how the San District and Breckenridge can work together.
