Traffic at tunnel breaks Memorial Day record

SUMMIT COUNTY ” A new traffic record was set for the Memorial Day holiday at the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70.

Between 12:01 a.m. Friday, May 27, and 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 30, 131,796 vehicles traveled through the tunnel ” the highest Memorial Day four-day count in its 33-year history.

The Colorado Department of Transportation reported this year’s count exceeded the 2004 number by 1,777 vehicles.

“Even though we had two days of snow, plenty still drove up,” said Eisenhower Tunnel superintendent Mike Salamon. “I can only attribute it to people who wanted to enjoy the mountain, snow or shine.”

Nearly 10.7 million vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower Tunnel in 2004.
