SILVERTHORNE – Cyclists and pedestrians can now move between Silverthorne and Dillon without having to ride along Highway 9 and through a busy interchange at Interstate 70. The new trail ties Silverthorne to the other communities on the existing paved trail system in Dillon, Frisco, Copper Mountain, Vail, Keystone and Breckenridge.The grand opening celebration of the Silverthorne Trail connection is 5:30 p.m. June 16. The trail begins where the Blue River Trail ends at the Red Village of the Silverthorne Factory Stores, near the Blue River Ballfields below the Dillon Dam. The trail then turns east between the Red Village parking area and the ballfields, and heads north to the hillside, climbing the steep grade over six switchbacks before connecting to the cul-de-sac on East Anemone Trail in Dillon. Trail users then can continue on the street to the existing paved trail link that ties to the Lake Dillon Trail at the south end of East Anemone.The new trail connection cost $748,000 to build, not including an additional $235,000 land purchase. State grants paid for 85 percent of the construction cost.Silverthorne received $521,000 from the Colorado Department of Transportation and $120,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado lottery proceeds.The town also worked with Denver Water to make the trail a reality.Recreationists are welcome to attend the celebration between the Blue River Ballfields and the Red Village.After the ribbon cutting, everyone is invited to ride or walk the trail to the Silverthorne Town Hall for refreshments at 6:15 p.m.-Daily News staff report
