Trail series race No. 3 today

summit daily news

BRECKENRIDGE ” The third race in the Nike Summit Trail Running Series, a course titled “New Nordic World,” is set for today on the cross-country trails surrounding Peak 8.

The race offers a long course of between eight and nine miles, and a short course of between five and six miles. The New Nordic World is the only one of the series’ six races that differs significantly from last year’s course.

Whereas last year’s race began and ended in town, this year’s race will begin and end near the Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 8 base area. The lower trails around the Breck Nordic Center, which served as the majority of the race venue last year, will no longer play such a role. Instead, the race will take place on the upper trail network.

“We just decided to switch it up a bit,” said town of Breckenridge rec programs manager Diane McBride, who runs the series.

McBride noted the changes were largely to facilitate additional parking, more managable manpower requirements and to give the long-course runners a taste of the entire Siberia Loop.

Runners should park at the Peak 8 base area, and the race is set to start at 5:45 p.m., as usual.
