Travel: Telluride Blues & Brews announces inaugural Sunset Blues Concert
Need another reason to attend Telluride Blues & Brews? On top of jaw-dropping scenery, performances by the finest blues, rock, gospel and soul artists and more than 150 brews from over 50 of the best microbreweries from the Southwest and beyond, the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival is hosting a free concert to kick-off the weekend’s festivities. The Sunset Blues Concert is set for Thursday, at 5 p.m., and it will feature British blues sensation, Matt Schofield, and hometown favorites, the Gold Kings.There is no better way to launch the Blues & Brews Festival than with guitarist extraordinaire Schofield. He is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and innovative guitarists to have emerged on the world scene for several generations. He’s rated one of the top 10 British blues guitarists of all time, putting him in the company of such iconic names as Eric Clapton and Peter Green.And the Gold Kings – a five-piece band whose sound is overflowing with cool rock and blues jams, reggae rhythms and funky back beats – will open the show. The band puts out a fun, get-up-and-dance, funky jams set, making a perfect beginning to an astounding weekend of music.The 17th annual festival will also feature B.B. King, the Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Band, George Thorogood and the Destroyers with special guests Elvin Bishop and Eddie Shaw, Galactic with Cyril Neville and Corey Henry, Jimmie Vaughan and the Tilt-A-Whirl Band, Allen Toussaint, T-Model Ford, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, JJ Grey & Mofro, Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm, Alberta Cross, The Dana Fuchs Band, Ronnie Baker Brooks, The Beth Hart Band, Gospel Morning with The Otis Taylor Band featuring Chuck Campbell and the Sheryl Renee Choir, Grady Champion, Terrence Simian & the Zydeco Experience, Dead Confederate, The Sugar Thieves, The Bill Magee Blues Band, Little Al Thomas and The Deep Down Fools. One of the most scenic music festivals in the country, Blues & Brews is a three-day celebration of music and microbrews, held in Telluride Town Park, an outdoor music venue with breathtaking 13,000-foot mountain peaks for a backdrop. By day, experience live blues, rock, gospel and soul performances, the best microbrews in Colorado, a wide variety of food and craft vendors, children’s activities and more – all on festival grounds. By night, follow the festival as it flows into town, with late-night juke joints and after-hours jams. Blues & Brews also puts on the “grand tasting” on Saturday. As one of the premier tasting events in the Southwest, it will feature more than 150 beers from over 50 microbreweries, including those from the Blues & Brews official beer sponsor, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Prepare to sample it all – from ales to lagers, nut browns to I.P.A.’s and everything in between.
