Travis Wm. Bennett: Obama fulfilling his promises
April 1, 2009
In response to Don Severe’s letter of 28 March, I must say that believing the last two presidents since JFK that knew how to speak are con men is somehow incredulous. Just because they got their ideas across doesn’t make them any more of a con man than the president in the middle (George W. Bush). While certainly not very articulate, Mr. Bush managed to con the Congress into letting him start an unnecessary and immoral war (assuming any war can be moral!). He also managed to con the Republican Party (and the electorate in 2004) that he was Christian, compassionate and conservative. With the possible exception of AIDS relief to Africa, there was no demonstration of any of the above for most of eight years in office.
Mr. Obama has told us in no uncertain terms that he would do things differently, and he has. We trusted his word and voted for him in an overwhelming fashion. I don’t see how anyone could call his campaign or presidency a con; a significant majority of Americans were ready for a change, and he is doing his best to deliver.
