Treasurer tries to score unfair political points off teachers

In response to State Treasurer Mike Coffman’s politically motivated rantings about the “lack of professionalism being displayed by teachers in the St. Vrain District,” I would ask several questions.

Was it the teachers who caused the district’s financial crisis in the first place? No.

Did the teachers negotiate in good faith for the raise that they are now giving up? Yes.

Are doctors, lawyers and other professionals in the habit of reducing their rate of pay while working the same or more hours? I think not.

How, then does this undeclared candidate for governor justify his accusations?

This dedicated group of teachers has simply asked for a 2 percent reduction in the time they are required to put in while accepting a 7 percent decrease in their compensation.

Further, most of these teachers will more than make up the time by working off the clock.

Come on, Mr. Treasurer. Find some actual issues on which to build your campaign.
