Trish Holcroft: Solar panels in the eye of the beholder in Breckenridge?

On March 8, the Breckenridge Town Council gave initial approval on a proposed set of solar panels to be located at the Riverwalk Center along Park Avenue, the Breckenridge Golf Course and other locations throughout Breckenridge, in a 5-2 decision.

“We decided to move forward and send it to planning,” Councilman Jeffrey Bergeron said. “The savings are substantial and there’s no outlying expense for the town. There is an aesthetic cost to these (solar panels), but beauty’s in the eye of the beholder.”

Tuesday, March 15 the Breckenridge Planning Commission recommended the town council shut down two proposals for the large stand-alone solar installations at the Riverwalk Center and Breckenridge Golf Club. This is only a recommendation, and the town council can still move ahead with this, if they choose to. The town council is expected to review the findings and possibly make a final decision, without public input, on March 22.

The full article and presentation of all proposed solar arrays around Breckenridge can be found at the Summit Daily website: http://www.summitdaily.com.

Whether you are in favor or opposed to this proposal, you need to come to Breckenridge Town Hall on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for the public comment portion of the town council meeting. I suggest bringing signs/banners to let the council know your feelings.

If you cannot make this meeting, please take a minute and e-mail your Breckenridge Town Council at http://bit.ly/gE0q8d

This may be in the eye of the beholder, but why are our elected officials not asking those of us, who are the beholders, what we think?
