Truck driver cleared in fatal Highway 9 crash

Reid Williams

SUMMIT COUNTY – An investigation into an accident that killed three people on Highway 9 last month has cleared the driver of a tanker truck involved in the crash of any wrongdoing.

Nina Huskova, 22, Monika Grigova, 23, and Miriana Feketova, 21, were ejected from the Mercury Tracer they were riding in July 24 on their way from Steamboat Springs. Huskova was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near Green Mountain Reservoir; Grigova and Feketova died later at hospitals.

The driver of the Tracer, 22-year-old Juraj Polercky, was arrested and charged with careless driving resulting in death.

According to the Colorado State Patrol accident investigation report, Polercky was driving southbound and attempted to move into the oncoming lane of traffic to pass another vehicle. Polercky steered into the side of a tanker truck that was attempting to pass the Tracer and another vehicle.

Troopers initially guessed that John Hammang, of Roosevelt, the driver of the truck, was speeding. A full analysis of the accident scene determined Hammang was not speeding and that the Tracer collided with the side of Hammang’s truck cab.
