Tsunami victimized animals, too

Let’s not make it worse than it was, regarding the tsunami. It was reported in a Jan. 29 article that “3,000 Swedes were killed in the disaster.”According to the Associated Press, 54 Swedes perished and 523 are still missing. It is tragic beyond words that even 54 Swedes died, but to print that all 3,000 who were vacationing in the area died is inaccurate.Kudos to Tommy Shreve for organizing the benefit concert, to all those who donated silent auction items, and to everyone who was able to attend and donate to this great cause via this venue.I’m sure that many in attendance had already donated in the early days right after the disaster hit, and I hope people will keep on donating because the need will be there for many years. And let’s not forget the poor animals in all of this, so often the forgotten victims in any disaster. Taking care of pets and livestock in destroyed areas brings hope to the survivors. An important part of the human aid effort, both economically and emotionally, is saving and reuniting survivors with the animals they need and love. Please send whatever you can to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, P.O. Box 193, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675 and/or the World Society for the Protection of Animals, 34 Deloss Street, Framingham, MA 01702.Both of these groups have veterinary teams on site, and they need our continuing support, too.
