BRECKENRIDGE – Two dogs died and the first floor of a home at 0577 County Road 450 just outside of Breckenridge was heavily damaged during a fire Sunday night.Red, White and Blue Fire Department battalion captain Mike Rutherford said one of the residents in the Huron Heights house awoke that night at about 10, opened the door and saw smoke. He tried to rescue the two dogs in the home, but was pushed back by the smoke.

Fire crews arrived within three minutes of the 911 call he placed. Firefighters noticed light smoke coming from the back of the house and heavy smoke and a small orange glow inside. Crews entered through the back door and extinguished the fire. The fire apparently originated in the living room and ignited the couch and surrounding area. Heavy smoke and fire damage was evident throughout the first level of the house.

Firefighters found the two dogs in an upstairs bathroom, but were unable to resuscitate them.Rutherford said damage upstairs was kept to a minimum because the three bedroom doors were closed.

“I was impressed with how much a simple closed door and drywall prevents the spread of fire and smoke in a house,” he said. “It really makes a significant difference in the amount of damage a room sustains.”The source of the fire is under investigation, but it doesn’t appear to be suspicious, he said.
