Udall praises Breckenridge

(An open letter to Breckenridge Mayor Sam Mamula.)

I was sorry I couldn’t join you today to congratulate the town and citizens of Breckenridge on their successful switch to biodiesel.

As Breckenridge has already recognized, biodiesel’s benefits are numerous. It is a cleaner-burning version of petroleum-based diesel, it is made from renewable sources like vegetable oils and animal fats, and it can be easily used in nearly all diesel equipment.

I commend Mayor Sam Mamula and the town of Breckenridge for taking this leadership role. Breckenridge’s use of biodiesel in its diesel municipal vehicles is already reducing pollution in Colorado. Mayor Mamula and the town of Breckenridge are taking the additional step of spreading the word about biodiesel to other Colorado communities through today’s (Wednesday) Rocky Mountain Biodiesel Symposium. I have no doubt it will be a great success and that fleet managers around the state will take home the message that a switch to biodiesel makes sense.

I also want to acknowledge the Breckenridge Ski Resort for also using biodiesel in many of its ski area vehicles. Together, the Breckenridge Ski Resort and the town are doing good things for their citizens and also helping to improve the environment of this area of Colorado.

Again, congratulations on taking these important steps to maintaining our high quality of life.
