‘Uncorked’ introduces novices to wine

Kimberly Nicolettisummit daily news

Being a wine connoisseur traditionally has been paired with an elite group, often called snobs. But those days are changing, and author Paul Kreider is helping turn the tide with “Uncorked: The Novice’s Guide to Wine.”The 201-page book is an accessible and easy-to-read road map to all of the essential aspects of wine, from “why red is red and white isn’t” to “how can wine, a liquid, be dry?” He begins with a dummy’s guide to pronouncing “cabaret” and “pinot,” then explains how drinking wine differs from tasting it. The wine-maker teaches people to experience with their senses, yet never trust their first sip, especially if they haven’t cleared their palates. The first part of his book talks about wine, while the second half talks about enjoying it, even going so far as to discuss wine snobs and how to act in a wine tasting room. Plus, he gives readers the secret to preserving “leftover” wine so it doesn’t go bad. Kreider helps people remember what they’re learning about wine by putting terminology and knowledge into context; for example, he describes what “oak” means. And in case you didn’t take in all the information in one reading, he provides a list of wine “words” and the page numbers people can refer back to.If you’ve ever been intimidated by wine varieties or books about wine, Kreider’s is the way to go, with its friendly and simple tone.
