Unfair conclusions in column

Katie de Decker

After reading “Teen-agers: What cost is poor judgment?” I found it insulting when Whitney Childers wrote that we teen-agers don’t know anything about the fires and dangers that are going on our state. Yes, I watch the news and yes, I read the newspaper. Did you know that even on the Disney and the Nickelodeon channels they were saying how dangerous the fires in Colorado are and how sorry they are for those who live in Colorado?

All my friends know about the fires. They have heard of them from their parents, radio, Internet, television, and newspapers. You could be watching the Simpsons’ or some other show and it flashes across the bottom of the screen. So it is not only on local news, but on national news, too. In fact we have received phone calls from relatives and family friends all over the country asking if we were OK. It was hurtful to say that we kids don’t know anything about the fires. It sounds like she was saying that we are kind of dumb and don’t pay attention or care about the world, and our health.

Yes, I think that the teen-agers should be punished with a lot of community service, because if they didn’t know about the fire dangers then, they must be living in another world. The parents are also responsible. I would think that when kids are leaving the house with matches and gas that parents would ask where they were going and what they were going to do. I don’t think that it is acceptable that the editor is basically saying that it is OK that these teen-agers started this fire because kids will be kids and didn’t really care if it spread or not. We all know how horrible it would be if a fire spread and burned down half of our county.
